Chelem and the Nearby Area

Chelem sits between the  Gulf of Mexico and a tidal area called “La Ria”. Chelem is also about about 3Km west of the harbor at Yulcapeten which is just east of Progreso. Progreso is a small city of approximately 50,000 people and is known for its pier which is 6 km long jutting out into the Gulf. The pier enables deep-water tankers and cruise ships to service this part of Yucatan. Despite the working port, Progreso is a nice destination for beaches, boardwalks (called the “malecon”) and local culture. The gallery below shows pictures from around Progreso and other cities and towns.

Yulcapeten,  La Ria and Progreso

The following pictures show the harbor at Yulcapten that allows for access to the inland water way called La Ria. These pictures were taken on a bike trip from Casa Kaana to Progreso (12km ride) as well as from a boat ride on the water. Boats can be rented from guides who gather at a ecotourismo center in Chelem. From the main square take a paved road away from center and away from the Gulf beach. At the end of the road there is a circle and a dock. Ask for a tour ‘en lancha’ (on a boat). You’ll need to decide how many hours you want to go for and will pay per person.
