Merida

Merida, the capital of the Yucatan state, is a 35 minute drive from Casa Kaana. This colonial city of about 800,000 people features art, culture and shopping. Don’t be surprised to see standard American brands like Home Depot, Walmart and TGIFriday’s in the malls and neighborhoods of the city. You’ll also find a few that you thought had perished (Hardees, Boston’s, Sanborns). 🙂

Merida is very large so you will also find local artisan shops, markets, restaurants and hole-in-the-wall type places. Don’t hesitate to explore the many neighborhoods to make your own ‘finds.’

The food scene including bars, coffee shops and restaurants are top notch as you’d find in many North American cities but with Mexican and Yucatecan flair.

Here are some of our photos of Merida.
